Contested H. naledi deliberately buried its dead, made rock art, and used fire — which would be startling given its small brain (~450–600 cm³). A peer-reviewed rebuttal in the Journal of Human Evolution (2023) found the evidence didn't meet the standard needed to support intentional burial (the bones aren't articulated as burials typically are) or the other claims. Contested Homo longi. The 2025 Denisovan identification calls that into question — it may represent a Denisovan population rather than a distinct species — but the taxonomy hasn't settled.
